NYU TSOA Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program
Housed at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, we are the only graduate program devoted solely to training composers and librettists to create works for the operatic and musical stage. Each year, 30 full-time students embark on a two-year M.F.A. course, participating in ongoing writing workshops that emphasize craft, the art of collaboration, rewriting, storytelling, and developing an original voice. This intimate program is solidly grounded in its location: students are immersed in all aspects of opera and musical theatre in New York, workshopping their material with directors, actors, and major artists in the field. The program culminates in the creation of full-length original works.
The Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program also runs the Tisch Opera Lab. Each year, composers and librettists from GMTWP create new short operas that are produced in collaboration with American Opera Projects, Tisch's Department of Design, the New School, and several external partners. In past years, students have created works about and then presented at the Stonewall Inn, the Brooklyn Museum, International House, and Fort Greene Park.
