Bernstein and the Meaning of Music
7:00PM - 9:15PM

Presented by W. Gregory Nissen

A performance and talk by composer/pianist W. Gregory Nissen about the question of how music creates meaning. Leonard Bernstein’s teachings, which were inspired in part by Noam Chomsky’s theories of transformational grammar, are analyzed and demonstrated, drawing conclusions that pertain to music education. Nissen’s presentation is partly inspired by his participation in Bernstein’s conducting class at the Tanglewood Music School in 1989, which also included conductors Marin Alsop and Bobby McFerrin.

Featuring Soprano Molly Rabuffo

General admission $15; Students and Seniors $10. No advance ticket sales. Cash accepted at the door.

Wolfe Gregory Nissen is a composer of cinema & theatrical musical scores and vocal & chamber music. He performs piano accompaniment for most of the dance studios in Manhattan and performed at the inauguration of President Bill Clinton. Nissen is the artistic director of the new Museum of Music Project –a plan for creating a new interactive educational center in New York. His play about Beethoven, entitled "True Artists", was presented at the Roy Arias Theater and his most recent lecture-concert was called “What Makes a Melody Great?” at the Queens Theatre. A graduate of Manhattan School of Music, he attended Mario Pei’s postgraduate seminar in Linguistics at Columbia University at the age of eleven. www.gregorynissen.com
